How To Quiet a Tantrum

Whenever the girls hurt themselves or feel the need for a good cry, I use this tactic to minimize the noise. I tell them to take deep breaths. If they are inhaling deeply, they can’t be screaming loudly at the same time.  While they are breathing in, I distract them to prevent the loud screaming from happening.

You have to be quick on your feet with the distraction, or you’ve just given them two lungs full of air to really let their disapproval be known.

It’s risky, but it’s worth a try if it will quiet them down quickly. There’s nothing worse than your child having a full-fledged meltdown in a public place where they need to be quiet.
